How to evaluate a portrait?

How to understand whether the order is well executed or not? Do you think that the criteria for evaluating a good portrait is only similarity with a person and smooth painting? You are deeply mistaken! Most of the portraits have no artistic value. Rather, these are embellished pictures and, if you do not understand the intricacies of portraiture, it is very easy to get into a mess.

To draw a portrait to order similar to the photo is not difficult. It is difficult to write it according to the laws of beauty, in an academic direction, observing all the rules, the basics of painting. What are these fundamentals and what should one pay attention to first of all?

Let’s say you want a portrait in pencil to order. Most likely, you will like a portrait that will not only look like a person, but also created by rubbing graphite (there is a similar technique with a dry brush) if it comes to working with a pencil. These are frequent criteria for evaluating a “good portrait” by which a person who does not understand the intricacies of painting and drawing is guided.

In fact, everything is much more complicated and not in brush strokes and in pencil strokes. Indeed, you can order a portrait from a photo in the style of Dutch masters (smooth painting), and you can order a portrait in the style of the Impressionists in the way that Van Gogh did. In any case, the portrait should cause emotions, not blind copying from a photo. Of course, it is very difficult to paint a portrait to order according to the laws of painting, which is why such portraits are much more expensive. In addition to emotions in the portrait, the character of the person being portrayed must be conveyed, perhaps his position in social society is shown.

When the artist makes for you a portrait with a pencil to order, pay attention to the transfer of volume in the picture. A person should not look flat, in a portrait should be given space, volume – according to the laws of air and linear perspective. It is this criterion for evaluating a quality portrait that almost all customers overlook. And many artists, using this, ignore the transfer of air space in the picture.

Do not forget that in addition to the similarity with the person, there are many features in the portrait that must be fulfilled. A real portrait from a photo on canvas is always a well thought-out work to the smallest detail. The artist must take into account the correct location of the figure in the drawing, the composition, do not forget about the color of the picture, the tonal diversity of the main masses and sections of the portrait.

Of course, you can order a portrait from a photo, without delving into its feature. But what would be better – a competently executed portrait, which has artistic value, which was created according to all the laws of painting, which can even be handed down from generation to generation, or a mediocre copy of a photograph in which only similarity with the portrait is transmitted? Of course you decide!

On our site you can order a portrait from photographs of various categories: economy, standard, premium, deluxe, VIP. What do these categories mean?
In the category “Economy” you will be offered a contour sketch in pencil or sketch oil. When ordering a portrait of this category, you will not get the perfect portrait with pencil or paint. The portrait will look like a man, but no more.

The “Standard” category is a more serious work of the artist. The artist will be able to adapt to any budget and draw a portrait to order, close to this painting or drawing. More efforts of the master, more labor and in the portrait of the category “Standard” there will be the same volume and minimum amount of space.

Even performing a portrait to order with a pencil, you can transfer the volume. In the category of “Premium” more volume, more airspace and detailed work. We can say that this is a great portrait, made according to the laws of painting, but without any particular feature, highlight.

The most worthy portrait can be considered the work performed in the category of “Deluxe” and “VIP”. In the category of “Deluxe” the artist takes into account not only all the wishes of the customer, but also does a competent work according to all the rules and laws of portrait painting and drawing. The deluxe category is an excellent choice for creating a magnificent picture with detail.

What, then, is the difference between a deluxe category portrait and a VIP portrait, you ask? The answer is obvious. A picture in the “VIP” category is a job that a master is capable of, that is, he cannot do better. This is a laborious job that requires maximum concentration and thoughtful stages at 100%. To order a portrait by photo of the category “VIP” means to create a real work of art that meets not only all the requirements of competent painting, will not only meet the needs of the customer.
